Harlequin Wines has been set up to cater to a select number of like-minded wine enthusiasts. We have found that many mail order companies offer very ordinary wines, and did not cater for people who were looking for quality, interest and value for money. Internet sales, mail order and select trade customers have grown over the years. The idea for Harlequin Wines came during a visit to the Franken region of Germany. It is a region that does not feature very heavily in most wine merchant's lists - why? Because the sales within Germany themselves are extremely high. So we started selling wines of the Franken region of Germany. This region remains our speciality. Special relationships are maintained in Randersacker near Wurzburg on the river Main where everybody seems to be called Schmitt! Now we source and have greater sales of French wine. We feature: Alsace, with wines from J Loberger of Berholtz and A Scherer in Husseren les Chateaux. In the Loire a favourite is Daniel Crochet and his Sancerre. We also like our Beaujolais. Several vineyards in the Languedoc give an excellent range of wines. La Sauvageonne, Chateau Grezan, Coupe Roses, Domaine Bourdic and Domaine la Grangette. All our producers we know and are visited regularly on tasting trips. Some relationships go back more than 20 years. Last year we added Italy to our portfolio. We aim to source wines of character and quality, which we feel represent outstanding value for money. |
