Savigny-les-Beaune Pernand Vergelesses 1er Cru 2001

Savigny-les-Beaune is a beautiful Burgundian village glimpsed from the autoroute but only savoured if visited at leisure. Savigny produces more red wine than anywhere else on the Cote de Beaune.
The village is at the entrance to the valley of Fontaine-Froide. The vineyards can be divided into two parts- those on the Pernand-Vergelesses side and those on the Beaune side. The soil is rough and full of gravel.
The renowned estate of Girard-Vollot split in 1998 and Jean-Jacques Girard took his share of the vines and has injected energy and enthusiasm in to producing excellent wines.

Jean-Jacques Girard is thriving in his new role as sole proprietor following the split with his brother Philippe. Jean-Jacques has built a fine new cuverie and his wines are getting better with the passing of every vintage. Yields have been reduced to give greater concentration whilst retaining the aromatic fruit of Pinot Noir. His Bourgogne Pinot Noir comes from vineyards within the Savigny-Les-Beaune commune and displays glorious red cherry and blackberry fruit.
With his long experience of viticulture, Jean-Jacques firmly believes that the best wines are made in the vineyard, and thus focuses his efforts on optimising the quality and health of the grapes themselves, which is reflected in his delightfully supple wines
He is famous for making gloriously aromatic and fruity wines that drink fantastically when young, but also reward a couple of years ageing.
