A pleasing
1993 discovery. Nathalie and Jean-Jacques Loberger continue
the tradition of the family firm started in the 17th century,
located on the "Route de Vins" in the village of Bergholtz,
20km south of Colmar. |

Riesling
2000 Vieilles Vignes
This delightful
example produced from mature vines is dry, with delicate fruit
flavours. Complex, with a subtle acidity and a hint of lemon,
it is ideal for fish, shellfish and "la choucroute". |

| Tokay
Pinot-Gris 2000 Weingarten
A full,
rich, soft wine, well balanced with acidity, and a touch of
pepper. Ideally suited for foie gras and spicy sausage, yet
will complement smoked fish and white meat. |

| The
family firm now run by Cristophe Scherer continues the tradition founded
in 1750 in Husseren-les-Chateaux. This is the highest wine village
of Alsace and is located 7Km from Colmar at the foot of the 3 Châteaux
of Eguisheim. |
Pinot
Noir 2000 Reserve
This light
coloured red wine is graced with the subtle flavours of summer
fruits, especially raspberry. With its light tannins and superb
dry finish, this is an ideal wine for roast lamb and goat's
cheese. |

Gewurztraminer
1999 Grand Cru Pfersigberg
This grape
has brought more fame to Alsace than any other. It has a distinctive,
spicy, full, honeyed - yet dry - finish, and floral overtones.
Marvellous as an aperitif, it is also ideal with the rich
Alsace cooking of spicy foods and Munster cheese. This Grand
Cru is a superlative example. |

| The pretty region of Alsace offers unique appeal, in both
its wine and
culture. The ribbon of vineyards is broken only by small villages,
whose half-timbered houses are decorated in summer with brightly-planted
window boxes. |

| Standing apart from the rest of France, Alsace is geographically
isolated on the west of the Vosges Mountains and on the east
by the river Rhine. Alsace has the driest climate in France;
its summers are hot and stormy, with long, dry autumns. |
| The wines here are predominately white (the only permitted
red variety cultivated is Pinot Noir). One of the finest grape
varieties, Riesling - often described as the King of Alsace
- gives distinctly dry wines that vary in style from fresh,
open and elegant to subtle, aromatic and firm. |
| Another
important grape is Gewurztraminer, producing a spicy aroma, which
can be so sultry that its dryness comes as a surprise. |
| Pinot
Gris (locally known as Tokay d'Alsace) is another great grape often
giving wines high in alcohol. This wine has a firm structure and intriguing
aroma and taste. In Alsace it often complements meat dishes. Pinot
Noir, now being made in the Burgundian manner, is ideal for lamb and
goat's cheese. |
| We
recently returned to Alsace, and were able to find some beautiful
wines, not only from winemakers which we featured last year, but also
from two new Domaines, so now all four grape varieties are represented.
We believe the mixed-case deal in particular is exceptional value
for Alsace wine, here in Britain. |
